Artist Biography

Tong Bowei (佟博威, born 1995, Heilongjiang, China) is an artist and researcher whose practice integrates painting, photography, digital media, and art theory. His work explores realism, visual perception, and the experiential dimensions of contemporary art, engaging with the relationship between artistic form and human experience.

He completed both his BA and MA in Fine Art at Arts University Bournemouth in the United Kingdom, where his practice expanded from figurative painting to three-dimensional surfaces and digital media. His early artistic investigations centered on color structures, geometric order, and natural forms, laying the foundation for his later interdisciplinary development.

From 2021 to 2022, he taught Design Psychology and Modern Design History at a university in Hunan, China. This experience deepened his understanding of the connections between design, perception, and visual cognition.

He completed his PhD in 2025 at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in South Korea. His doctoral research examined the evolution and cultural significance of rural realist painting in post–Cultural Revolution China, exploring how realism functions as a mode of social reflection and aesthetic reconstruction within contemporary visual culture.

In parallel with his academic research, Tong continues to develop photographic and digital works. His photography often captures natural textures, atmospheric light, and everyday visual phenomena, exploring how ordinary scenes can be transformed into reflective aesthetic experiences. His 3D modeling and digital practice further investigate spatial perception and material translation, bridging traditional realism with contemporary technological media.

Through both artistic production and theoretical inquiry, he seeks to contribute to a global dialogue on realism, visual culture, and the experiential constitution of art.
